About Mercy Ministries
Mercy Ministries is a national charity dedicated to providing a six-month residential programme for young women suffering from life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, self harm, depression, and the effects of abuse in all it's forms.
With over 25 years of experience we address all aspects of a young woman’s well being - physical, spiritual and emotional - and deal with the root cause of her issues. We desire that every young woman not only completes the programme but also discovers the purpose for her life and returns to her community adding value as a productive citizen.
This is accomplished through our structured programme consisting of:
- A discipleship programme called Choices that Bring Change, which offers in-depth individualised sessions on a one to one basis
- Biblical teaching
- Life skills training
- Fitness and nutrition
- Residential care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- After care and staff support
Why we exist
In the United Kingdom:
- 1 in 15 young people are trapped in a cycle of self-harm and this rate is amongst the highest in Europe
- An astounding 1.15million people have an eating disorder and the most likely affected are young women aged 15 -25.
- Anorexia Nervosa has one of the highest rates of death for any psychiatric condition
- 1 in 4 women will require treatment for depression at some time.
- 1 in 4 women will experience sexual violation, or attempted sexual violation
There is a desperate need for organisations like Mercy Ministries UK to provide the support that tackles the root causes of these issues, rather than merely medicating the symptoms.
We seek to break the cycle of destruction by helping one young woman at a time find freedom and restoration in a beautiful and safe home-like environment. This in turn positively affects the generation she will parent and drastically reduces the chance of history repeating itself. We believe that freedom for one can bring freedom for many.
Nancy Alcorn, the Founder and President of Mercy Ministries says: Through our experience we have learned that God has not equipped the government to set the captives free but as Luke 4:8 says, he has called us Christians to heal the broken hearted and proclaim liberty to the captives. It is our belief that if we provide a programme where girls can come and receive new life through Jesus Christ, as well as professional training in other areas, their lives will never be the same.
